A
long-range ocean going single-screw salvage and fire fighting tug that
was one of the largest and most powerful in the world when built. Originally
owned by United Towing of Hull, Lloydsman was subsequently sold to new
owners in Singapore, and there gained a rather startling all-white paint
job. The deck and superstructure layouts of the design are relatively
complicated, which makes this single screw tug a good project for the
more experienced modeller. Lloydsman was built with a device called the
Towmaster nozzle, thought to be a revolution at the time. This was essentially
a single fixed Kort type nozzle, with three moveable rudders aft of the
prop, and another two in front of it. This would be very complicated at
model size, and something closer to a conventional single propeller would
be a more practical proposition. As can be seen from the photo below,
Lloydsman is a handsome and impressive model, especially when finished
in the original United Towing colour scheme.
